Dr. Friesen grew up in South Winnipeg and attended the University of Manitoba before entering the University of Waterloo School of Optometry. She graduated with honours and received the Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Patient Care.
Dr. Friesen has a special interest in Children’s Vision including amblyopia and vision therapy. She has done additional education in testing and designing individualized programs for lazy eye, sports vision, reading, learning and dyslexia. Providing full service care to her patients includes having the most modern and full selection of low vision devices, in house lab, personally selecting the frames and sunglasses, offering glaucoma & macular degeneration management, plus the most recent therapeutic and aesthetic solutions for her patients.
Previously, she served on the Optometry Examining Board of Canada and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Currently, she serves on the boards of Fighting Blindness Canada and Mennonite Central Committee. Dr. Friesen is the co-chair of the Manitoba Association of Optometrists Children’s Vision Committee and continues to engage the Provincial Government for eye care funding.
Dr. Friesen practices with her husband and their daughter Dr. Anika Nelson. Dr Friesen also has a daughter who is a pharmacist and son who is studying science and playing volleyball at Canadian Mennonite University.
