Dr. Nelson grew up on a farm in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. He studied undergraduate science at the University of Alberta. After this, he attended the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and received his optometry degree. He then went to the University of Alabama School of Optometry, where he completed a residency in family practice and low vision.
Dr. Nelson has served as the president of the Manitoba Association of Optometrists (MAO) and the president of the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO). He was co-awarded Manitoba Optometrist of the Year in 2014 for his work to legislate Manitoba Optometrists’ ability to write medical prescriptions to treat eye disorders.
Currently, Dr. Nelson is the North American Geographic Representative on the World Council of Optometry and sits on the board of Eye Recommend.
