Setting Your Children Up for Success
Our team believes that healthy eyes are essential for a bright future—and that journey starts early! We offer dedicated children’s eye exams designed to help keep your little one’s vision development on track.
Good vision can be crucial to a child’s learning, development, and overall well-being. Several eye conditions, like myopia, can develop in childhood, leading to early vision problems that affect your child’s well-being—even if they seem to be seeing normally.
Early detection and treatment are key to helping prevent vision issues from hindering children’s progress and confidence. Do not let vision problems slow your child down—contact us to schedule your appointment today.
When Should My Child
Have an Eye Exam?
Just like their bodies and minds, a child’s vision is constantly developing. Early detection of potential conditions is crucial for managing the long-term effects vision challenges can have on learning, play, and overall well-being.
We recommend eye exams based on CAO guidelines:
- 6–9 Months Old: 1 Initial exam to assess development
- 2–18 Years Old: Comprehensive eye exams every 12 months until the age of 19
- Myopia (Nearsightedness): Children with myopia may require exams every 3–6 months to help monitor & manage myopia progression.
Why Are Children’s Eye Exams Important?
Unlike adults who can easily communicate any vision difficulties they experience, young children may not realize they have a problem or may not know how to talk about it. These uncorrected vision problems can lead to:
- Myopia Management: Options are available to help slow myopia progression. Early diagnosis and management are essential to help prevent eye health complications & worsening vision.
- Learning Difficulties: Blurry vision or focusing issues can make reading, writing, and focusing on the whiteboard a struggle.
- Delayed Development: Good vision can be crucial for hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and overall development.
- Behavioural Issues: Vision frustration can manifest as behavioural problems, like difficulty concentrating, acting out, or withdrawal.
What Happens During a Child’s
Eye Exam?
At Eyes on Bridgwater, we understand that eye exams can sometimes feel intimidating for children. That’s why we create a fun and welcoming environment! Our team knows how to help put even the most wiggly patients at ease!
We use age-appropriate techniques and fun tools to conduct comprehensive eye exams for kids, from colourful decor to engaging activities. Our goal is to make the experience positive and stress-free.
Visual Testing
We can assess how well your child sees at different distances and if their vision is sharp. For younger children, this might involve using pictures or engaging charts instead of traditional letters, so your child does not need to know the alphabet.
Eye Alignment Testing
We can check how well kids’ eyes work together as a team, which is crucial for proper depth perception. We may use playful games or specialized equipment to assess this visual skill.
Ocular Health Assessment
We can examine your child’s eye health in detail, looking for signs of potential conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (crossed eyes). This may involve a dilated eye exam for older children, where we use special drops to widen their pupils for a more thorough examination.
Discussion with You
We will explain our findings in clear language, answer any questions you may have, and discuss the next steps if needed. We encourage open communication and aim to address any concerns you may have about your child’s vision.
Glasses Prescription Testing
Early detection of vision problems allows us to offer effective vision correction to help your child see clearly and confidently. We will check for focusing issues and common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. We can recommend personalized support, from managing myopia to treating strabismus (crossed eyes).
