Investing in a Lifetime of Clear Vision
At Eyes on Bridgwater, we understand the importance of safeguarding your vision as you age. That’s why we offer comprehensive adult and senior eye exams designed to not only help you see clearly but also to detect eye diseases and conditions early on.
Our eye exams go beyond simply measuring your reading prescription. They provide a comprehensive assessment of your eye health, customized to address the specific needs of adults and seniors. Our team delves into your medical history, including any existing conditions and medications you’re taking, as these can sometimes impact your vision.
Let us help you see your world clearly. Contact us to schedule your appointment today.
What to Expect During
Your Eye Exam
Our eye exams provide a thorough assessment of your eye health, including:
- Detailed Medical History Reviews: We discuss your overall health, family history of eye conditions, and any medications you are taking.
- Visual Testing: We measure your near and distance vision, assessing for conditions like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism, determining if you need an updated eyeglasses or contact lenses prescription.
- Diagnosing and Treating Eye Conditions: We evaluate inner and outer eye tissue to look for signs of eye disease and recommend appropriate, timely management options when needed.
How Often Should You Have an Eye Exam?
The frequency of your eye exams can depend on your age, overall health, and risk factors for eye diseases. The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends:
- Birth–24 Months: First eye exam between 6–9 months
- Children (2–18): Annual comprehensive eye exams
- Adults (19–64): Comprehensive eye exams once every 2 years
- Adults with risk factors like diabetes: Comprehensive eye exams yearly
- Adults (65+): Comprehensive eye exams yearly
Eye Exam Fees
Some tests are recommended in a comprehensive eye exam but are not covered by Manitoba Health. Many private insurance plans will cover eye exam fees, but check with your insurance carrier for your coverage dates and limits before your visit, as we cannot access this information for you.
Age:
- 18 & Under: Subsidized by Manitoba Health. Optomap Retinal Photos and Axial Length recommended annually.*
- 19 – 64: $149
- 65 & Older: $65 (Subsidized by Manitoba Health)**
- Optomap Retinal Photos*: $45
- Axial Length Measurement*: $30*
- Visual Field Testing: $30
- Forms: $10
- Transfer of Records: $20
*Optomap retinal photos can help detect asymptomatic eye conditions. Axial length measurements help monitor myopia (nearsightedness), which can progress throughout childhood into early adulthood.
**Manitoba Health does not cover some tests and patient counselling. The fee for these tests is $65, which is required for us to provide this level of service.
Benefits of Regular Eye Exams
Regular eye exams help us find your correct vision prescription and play a crucial role in the early detection and management of eye diseases that can become more prevalent with age.
These eye diseases can include:
- Glaucoma: Often called the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma can gradually damage the optic nerve if left undetected and untreated.
- Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): This leading cause of vision loss in adults affects the centre of the retina, which is responsible for sharp central vision.
- Diabetic Retinopathy: Diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the eye, potentially leading to vision loss if not managed properly.
- Cataracts: A cataract is a gradual clouding of the lens within the eye, which can impair vision, causing blurriness, light sensitivity, double vision, and difficulty seeing at night.
- Dry Eye Disease: Caused by poor tear production or quality, dry eye is a common condition that leads to dryness, irritation, blurred vision, and discomfort.
Catching Vision Problems Early
During your comprehensive eye exam, our eye doctors can test for common eye problems, assess the condition and function of your eyes, and determine the appropriate prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses for your needs.

From simple tests (e.g., eye chart reading) to more complex technology-assisted testing (e.g., a high-powered lens), our complete range of tests helps us evaluate the current condition of your eyes in-depth.
However, we do more than just examine the eyes—we take time to help you learn more by discussing our findings and answering all questions and concerns that you may have. At Eyes on Bridgwater, we want you to fully understand your eye health.
